FREE UNIVERSITY OF BRUSSELS: ULB Languages, a dome dedicated to language teaching

Free University of Brussels recently issued the following announcement.

ULB Languages is a dome that brings together initiatives designed to promote and develop the language performance of students and University staff.

New impetus for language teaching

Anchored in an increasingly multilingual society, the ULB provides its students who are specialists in other disciplines (i.e. those whose language does not constitute the field of study) as well as its staff, language teaching adapted to the realities of professional life.

In October 2019, the organization of modern language teaching at ULB took off again with the launch of ULB Languages. This new autonomous structure aims to bring together and coordinate all of the initiatives intended to promote and develop the language performance of students and University staff.

Through its objectives and projects, ULB Languages tends to widen the field of language teaching to all faculties.It focuses on French as a foreign language, Dutch and English as decisive languages while nourishing the project of gradually including other languages taught to specialists in other disciplines.

In addition to this desire to rationalize and revitalize resources in the area of language teaching, this dome has many missions, including the implementation of pedagogical innovations that can be digital and / or autonomous, intended to prepare or reinforce learning. languages studied within the University.

Learn a language in an alternative way

In addition to the compulsory language courses integrated into the training of students specializing in other disciplines, ULB Languages also offers other types of activities of alternative learning methods intended for students as well as ULB staff..

French courses for non-French speaking students

Each year, the ULB welcomes many non-French-speaking, regular and Erasmus students. In order to help them calmly follow their curriculum while sustainably enriching their language skills, ULB Languages offers them to follow French as a foreign language courses adapted to the levels of each student.

The PORTFOLIO project

In February 2020, ULB Langues launched the PORTFOLIO project, a new approach to language teaching combining flexibility and autonomy. The aim of this program is to deepen a foreign language and to give the learner the keys which will make him autonomous in his learning during and after his participation. The first edition of the program is devoted to English and Dutch and open to the entire university community (students and staff). Building on its success, the program was sold out only a few days after its launch.

Conversation tables - Le Café langues

For several years, the ULB has been organizing open conversation tables where the whole of the university community, which can freely come and explore no less than seven languages. Soon, the conversation tables will become the Café Langues, a space imagined in a Café-Presse spirit that will invite participants to exchange views on various subjects in a relaxed atmosphere without ever using their mother tongues.

Support courses with the F9 Languages school

In order to help them strengthen or maintain their linguistic level, the ULB offers all of its students free support courses in English, Dutch and French as a foreign language. These are taught in collaboration with the F9 Languages in Brussels language school and organized throughout the year in monthly or intensive versions.
